Hello toms hardware, I have a question. Can you remove a fan from an Intel heatsink and still use it on your CPU? Also, Is it possible to place a heatsink on top of another heatsink? Thanks.

welll yeah you can use thee fan for other puposes but the CPU fans have 4 pin connector and regular fans only have 3 and cannot control the speed...
if you say the heatsink yes you can but you need to use ALWAYS thermal paste

no you cant place two heatsinks together... if you need a better one you need tu buy a better one..

I don't want to use the fans, but I want to use the heatsink without a fan.

wont work that way.you need the fan as well as the heatsink.you can have the biggest heatsink you can get into your case but without a fan to ventilate and dissapate the heat it will reach a saturation point, where the heatsink cant get rid of the heat as fast as it builds up.im sure there are better ways to explain this but its all i got right now.

Fan died and my push pins broke on my bigger Intel heatsink, and on my other PC (which works) the heatsink has no fan.

Put back on your heat sink without a fan. Clean the old paste and use new thermal paste. Buy a fan that you can power through molex or sata power connectors and mount that onto the heatsink.

Do you mount a new fan on a heatsink (molex) with the sticker facing down or the sticker facing up?

that depends on whether you want to fan to push air into the heatsink or pull it out.if your cpu heatsink is close to your exhaust fan i would make it pull air out. if not set it to push air into the heatsink. just start your computer with the fan plugged in but not installed to see which way is which.

cable ties might work, its hard to say as i can see it.you also might find a fan the same size as the old on where the screw holes matchup.whatever works.
